Where is it located?
Cairns is located in northeastern Australia and is about a 7.5-hour direct flight from Japan. Budget airlines with no fuel surcharges operate on this route, making it an affordable and convenient destination—especially outside of peak travel seasons.
What’s it like?
With a population of around 170,000—similar to Kamakura, a historic coastal city near Tokyo—Cairns is a unique city where both the ocean and the mountains are home to UNESCO World Heritage sites.

World Heritage Site by the sea: the Great Barrier Reef
Known for its crystal-clear waters, Cairns is home to the Great Barrier Reef—the largest coral reef system on the planet.

World Heritage Site in the mountains: the Wet Tropics of Queensland
This ancient rainforest is believed to be the oldest in the world, and it’s well known as a filming location for the movie Avatar and the Japanese TV program Sekai no Shasō kara (“From the World’s Train Windows”).

What makes it fun?
Absolutely! Cairns is a lot of fun.
The city is clean and safe, English is the main language, and there’s only a one-hour time difference from Japan.
With so many attractions to explore, it’s a perfect travel destination.
I visited Cairns with my elementary school son, and we had an amazing time.
That’s why I’ve decided to share all the wonderful things about this beautiful city!
